  • Small island countries, as the northern part Cyprus, have certain common difficulties in terms of their constraints in sustainable development and competitiveness;
  • Small population and lesser territory, inadequacy of natural resources, lack of human capital and qualified labour force;
  • Narrowness of markets, difficulty of developing high scale economies, adequately organised transportation means and communication costs;
  • High dependence on imports, low volume of exports and production;
  • Difficulties in accessing foreign markets, vulnerabilities to political, economic and financial shockwaves;
  • Fragile environmental conditions etc.

Having this in mind, the northern part of Cyprus is therefore showing both the characteristics of developed and developing world communities.

Janja Benedik

Janja Benedik (born 1970) has finished her study of biology at University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. She was teaching biology in different high schools for couple of years and later she started to work at Natural History Society of Slovenia where she is still working. Among different tasks with different projects run by society, she started to develop natural tourism more intensively. First trips were limited only to Slovenia but later expands also to other countries. When training to become an official licenced tourist guide she noticed lack of natural sciences in education of future tourist guides so she is trying to develop tourist's programs where nature, protected areas and sustainable tourism are priority. In last 15 years, she organized and guided more than 120 different programs in different countries in Europe and Middle East. Participants get a lot of information about local nature, which includes ecosystems, flora and fauna, local geology, and local history, way of life, food etc. She is promoting local tourism with hiring local tourist guides and using accommodation at local guesthouses. The groups she’s guiding are usually small because mass tourism is destroying local communities and they lost their local spirit. She wants to show the tourists peculiarities of nature, history and culture of visited countries and not left any destroying footprints, only new friendships, satisfied tourists with new and unique experiences and of course satisfied local people, who can earn some money to have a better life and who can preserve old traditions with their promotion to the tourists. Diversity enriches people and the key of future tourism is a sustainable tourism.
